Come & Serve the Lord as a Liturgical Minister We are in need of more volunteers to serve as Liturgical Ministers. Please help if you can. A Liturgical Minister is simply being involved with or assisting with the Mass. While the Priest is the presider and main guide for the movement of the liturgy, it is a community effort to complete the Mass, and to do so in a safe, dignified and reverent manner. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Celina Santos at [email protected]. Below are several ways you can use your gifts and talents to bring more beauty to the Mass. ALTAR SERVERS "Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Altar Servers must be in the 5th Grade or above to serve. These young people serve at weekend Masses, reconciliation services, and other liturgical celebrations such as Stations of the Cross. Adults typically serve during the daily Masses. So, this is one of the ministries that is open to persons of ALL ages! AUDIO/VISUAL SYSTEM OPERATORS "Anyone who has eyes to see ought to see... anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear." Audio/Visual system operators help with livestreaming our Mass and other services for those who can with those who cannot be present with us either because they are homebound, sick in the hospital or away or far from the parish. They also management our powerpoint slides to aide the congregation follow the prayers and songs during celebrations. COMMUNION MINISTERS "... you are told: 'The body of Christ,' and you reply, 'Amen.' Be a member of the body of Christ and let your 'Amen' be true." Communion Ministers join the Priest to help distribute the body and blood of Christ to the assembly. Some of them likewise serve as ministers to the sick and homebound of our community. LECTORS "... so the word that goes forth from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do." Lectors proclaim the readings from the Scriptures during the celebration of the Mass and other liturgies, and read the pulpit announcements and prayers of the faithful. SACRISTANS "One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life." Sacristans are “humble servants” of Christ who serve by preparing the altar and sanctuary for Mass, and arranging and managing the liturgical books, sacred vessels, bread, and wine. USHERS & GREETERS "... established then in their position of trust. Thus they ad their sons kept guard over the gates of the house of the Lord..." Ushers and greeters do much more than just seat people, take up the collection, stand watch in case of emergency, and greet people. They are the "Open Doors" to fellow worshipers, and hence serve as the face of the Church! They welcome each new arrival, make them feel at home, and point them towards Christ. CANTORS AND MUSICIANS "Sing to the Lord a new song; skillfully play with joyful chant." Cantors serve as the song leaders during the celebration of the Mass, and most importantly, proclaim the psalm and general sung responses. Musicians, both vocalists and instrumentalists, are involved in may ways in the liturgical life of Saint Raymond's. History
The original St. Raymond Church, now located on Donlon Way off Dublin Boulevard in Dublin, is the oldest Catholic church building in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The four-acre plot for the church and Catholic cemetery was donated by Michael Murray and Jeremiah Fallon, brothers-in-law and natives of Ireland, who settled in Dublin in the early 1850's. The church was dedicated on April 22, 1860. The church was originally a mission church served by a priest who rode out from Oakland on horseback. The first wedding was performed in the pioneer church in 1865. The original belfry was added to the building in 1880. The original building was maintained and renovated through the years, including extensive repairs in 1922, and was in constant use until just prior to World War II. 1960 brought tremendous growth to the valley with the opening of San Ramon Village housing development. Catholics attended Mass at St. Augustine's or St. Isidore's until St. Raymond was established in 1961. The new pastor's first quest was to find a place to celebrate Sunday Mass. Old St. Raymond was in disrepair, not to mention too small, for a fast-growing young parish. He chose to use the chapel at Camp Parks until the all purpose church/hall was ready at the current site. On Thanksgiving Day 1966, the first Mass was offered in the parish hall building. In 1975, the community began to outgrow its existing facilities and the need was felt for a permanent church building, with modifications to be done to the hall. After much discussion and planning, construction on our new church was begun in October 1976. The first Mass to be offered in the new church was on July 16, 1977, with formal dedication ceremonies on September 18, 1977, by the newly-appointed Bishop of Oakland, John S. Cummins. In February 2001, the parish began an ambitious campaign to renew the worship space. By November of the same year, an interior renovation was completed through the hard work, perseverance, and prayers of many dedicated parishioners.
